Double, Double, Oil and Trouble
Published in Hardcover by Simon & Schuster (July, 1978)
Author: Emma Lathen
Average review score:

Great look at mischief among the oil companies.
John Putnam Thatcher gets involved in a kidnapping. Not as a victim, and certainly not as the bad guy, but as the one delivering the million and a half dollars in ransom to the Swiss bank where the terrorist group known as Black Tuesday will pick it up.

Poor Thatcher. He likes a quiet life. But nothing goes his way. The ransom is picked up by a blond packbacker who immediately disappears. The terrorists remain quiet, but it takes weeks before the victim reappears. And when he does, the questions just become louder. Because the victim was the major figure in an important oil drilling contract for the North Sea in Scotland. His company wins the bid and are just beginning to get things ironed out when someone plants a bomb in his car. Then it turns out that he had never been kidnapped in the first place. So what happened to all that ransom money?

I always like Emma Lathen's books, but since they are out of print, they are hard to find. I just got a copy of this one yesterday at a thrift store and I couldn't wait to read it. I hadn't ever read this one before and it was a real treat. I love her stuff. If you're a fan, I really recommend this one.

Learning is a lifetime adventure!
I found this to be a very lovely book. I didn't want to finish reading it, so when I did, I started reading it over again and found it to be just as enjoyable the second time. In fact, I am planning on reading it again! Joanne shares some of her own experiences in life, which any of us can relate to with no problem. It makes a wonderful gift, as there is something in it for everyone.

Published in Hardcover by Phoenix Pub (February, 1986)
Author: William Lowell. Putnam
Average review score:

Amazing book!
Anyone interested in the White Mountains of New Hampshire will be fascinated by this compelling account of Joe Dodge, the real Old Man of the mountains. Putnam weaves humor and tragedy with his own personal knowledge of the man who was perhaps most responsible for the modern perception of the Northern Peaks. AMC Hutmaster, pioneer SAR organizer, co-founder of the Mount Washington Observatory, organizer of the legendary Inferno races from the summit of Washington to Pinkham Notch, it's all told in this wonderful book.

The Journal Project: Dialogues and Conversations Inside Women's Studies
Published in Paperback by Sumach Press (May, 1995)
Authors: Dana Putnam, Dorothy Kidd, and Elaine Dornan
Average review score:

This book is a jewel, not to be missed.
I was a contributing writer to "The Journal Project." However, my part was so small, I will risk hints of self-serving interests to rave about the women who created this work. It is a jewel. It is (and is not) about academic women and the classroom process in "Women's Studies." Those excluded from higher education, share an identity and voice here as well. Dispel any unflattering charges about the content of "Women's Studies" courses. the world. "The Journal Project" is a collaboration of a particular small women's community, with its diverse races, ethnicities, languages and/or sexual orientations. Sometimes funny, sad, stirring anger and pain, this work is the unfurling of a hundred -- no, a thousand -- petals of a flower only to reveal the raw, complex beauty of living fully in one's own life. With gaining the knowledge of our 'one-ness' with each other, we unwrap ourselves further, setting off shocks of insight, understanding, and exclamations of "Yes! I've felt that. I thought the exact same thing."

What could be more invigorating, life-affirming -- more essential in the lives of today's women? "The Journal Project" gives hope and meaning to the varied roles of women, no matter what generation

The first text on the Milwaukee brace.
This classic textbook is the first reference for the current usage of the Milwaukee brace for the treatment of Idiopathic scoliosis. Drs. Authors: Karen Putnam, Marianne Cramer, and Central Park Conservany
Average review score:

A great spring/summertime companion
I live just a few blocks from Central Park, but reading through this book, I realize how many things there are that I've never seen or appreciated! It's a great introduction to the history of the park and the things beyond the grass and trees that there are to explore. It joins my Zagat guide in my purse as things I don't leave home without on the weekends.

The Bible for Ohio Legal Research
This well written and concise book is an absolute must-have for any library or individual interested in Ohio legal research. It provides information not only on ways to access current law, but antiquated Ohio law as well. I look forward to a revision.

Organizing and Managing Classroom Learning Communities
Published in Paperback by McGraw Hill College Div (February, 1992)
Authors: J. Bruce Burke and Joyce G. Putnam
Average review score:

A great book for Constructivist teaching strategies!
I confess, I've only read about 15 pages of this book. However, I'm very impressed with the little I've read. The passage I read was about implementing ans framing the culture of the community. In this book, students are making their own classroom rules, learning how to resolve conflicts, even collaborating on the themes of study. The book has helpful week-by-week plans for how to make students invested in and accountable for their own learning.
